August 31 - Nike Human Race 10K

Congrats to Barb D, Paul P, Arthur, Laura and Grant who joined the throng of “red” on the 10K course winding from the Start at Smithe & Cambie; South over the Cambie Bridge; East along 2nd Ave, North on Quebec Str, West on the seawall from Olympic Village to Granville Island; West on 1st Ave; North over the Burrard Bridge; East along Pacific Ave and up Cambie to the Finish at Georgia.  Well done!

August 24 - Iron Man Triathlon

Amanda was our only Iron woman in this year’s 25th anniversary Ironman Canada race.  The weather was great in Penticton - not too hot. Amanda finished the race in 12:25:59  - 21st in her division out of 110.  (1:18:45 swim - and no black eye this year!  6:26:52 bike   4:31:09 run.)  Congrats Amanda!

August 24 - Four Lakes 10 km

It was a typical November day - cold, windy, rainsoaked.  Typical for November, really bad for August.  Four PRRers set out from Egmont after a night of too much wine and too many roasted marshmallows.  We were sure we’d be the only ones at the race - but no - 23 other nut cases also braved the weather.  8:30 am start time - despite fears the wind might blow the start line over.

Despite the hilly course I had my best ever mile time - so good in fact that I quickly clued in to their game.  The 1 mile sign was really only 1 km.  No one had a personal best on this course but with the small field - we cleaned up on hardware anyway.

Mike  50:23  fourth overall, second in his age group.
Dave  58:49  first in his age group!
Nicki  1:01:16  third in her age group
Jackie  1:01:43 (the only one of us who didn’t place due to the unfortunate fact that her age group was “loaded” with fast runners.  But if she had run as a man - she’d have been second.)

This is probably the only race where the organizer announces that the medals have all been “previously won” and were pulled together when she was cleaning out her basement.  What do you expect for a $15 entry fee?

August 17 - Bare Buns Run
Only 2 intrepid/exhibitionist PRR runners in this event this year.  Judging from the turnout in Chip’s underwear category - one would have thought this was the next logical step.  Butt only John and Dan ran in the buff.

It’s a 5km-ish run.  With chip timing (where do you wear your bib number?) John finished in 17:43.  3rd in his division.  9th overall.  Dan finished in 22:19.  8th in his division.  37th overall.  An improvement of 8 minutes over last year’s time!  Dan - while running naked may make you faster, we generally prefer that you wear something to regular club runs.

Congratulations gentlemen.  How’s the sunburn? (I’d ask “where’s the sunburn” but I don’t want to know the answer!)

Oh yes, there are pictures.  http://www.flickr.com/gp/7431699@N06/6a3eJ3

August 10 - Delta Half Marathon
Despite having a cold and despite running in Stormy the day before, Len posted a better-than-Scotia result in the Delta Half Marathon.  His time was 2:07:58

November:

Haney to Harrison Relay & Ultra
Nov 8th
8 person relay or 100 km Ultra

The club will enter 3 or hopefully 4 teams this year - attempting to balance the participants so that all teams finish close to the same time.  Although rumour has it there’s dissent among the crowd - some club members may actually want to “load” their team to maximize their time on the course.  And why wouldn’t they given the typical November weather.

Fall Classic
Nov 16th
Half, 5K, 10K

PRR takes on The Mother of All Relays!
Posted by: PRR Executive @ 10:16 pm

The Hood to Coast gang returned from their 4 day American odyssey.  No doubt the next newsletter will have all the details - but here it is in brief from Karen:

197 miles, 36 legs, 12 runners:  Dan, Ellie, Susan, Jess, Bill, Karen, Debby, John, Rick, Grant, Premica, Terry (last minute substitution for Len), 2 drivers:  Bruce (all the way from Calgary) and Len

The weather was hot!  Fri 25C, Sat 22C at the beach, and sunny at the beer garden.
We started at 1:00 pm Friday and finished in 24:06:30.  We reached the beach at 1 pm and enjoyed the beach party for 5 hours waiting to see if we placed in the top 10 Mixed overall.  We didn’t, but we did place 10th out of 283 in the Mixed Open category.
Total road kills 585!

On her first leg, Premica ran so fast that she got to the exchange 5 minutes before the van.  The exchange between legs 24 and 25 was backed up, so Dan had to run ~1/4 mile to the exchange to meet Terry, missing by about 5 seconds.  No one got lost this year, and the whole team was really bang on with their predicted times (although Jess beat all of her times by 2 - 4 minutes!)

The only bacon on the course was served at the high school, and best other team name is up for discussion - my favourite was “When the Fit Hits the Shan”.

H2H is coming
Posted by: PRR Executive @ 6:56 pm

I know we’re still enjoying the last days of summer yet one simply can’t help longing for those torrential downpours of November.  The darkness til 8:00 am.  The 4:40 wake up call. The smell of manure (okay leg 5 only).  The rainsoaked and sweaty runners in your car.  Yes folks, H2H is coming.

The annual 100km relay from Haney to Harrison takes place Saturday November 8th.  It’s a big event for the club with 30 or so PRR participants a year (3 teams of 8 plus volunteers) but this year we’re stepping it up.  We’re going all out.  We’re pulling together 4 teams.  We’ve got soul but we’re not …

8 legs of roughly 8 to 15 km varying in hilliness and difficulty.  Team captains get to decide who runs which leg.  So either sign up to be a team captain - like Jess did - or find out who the team captains are and start buying them beer.

So far the following 32 people have signed up!   That’s 4 teams.  But as often happens - some people get injured or have date conflicts pop up.  So a few spares would be a good thing.

We still need 1 additional volunteer.  And don’t forget - each team will be expected to provide 1 “early” and 1 “late” volunteer from their 8 runners.  These volunteers will help out at Exchange 3.

Runners:
Nicki
Grant
Laura - smelly Leg #5 please
Jackie M (Team Captain #3)
Dave M (didn’t actually email me but I’m sure he’ll be there - running leg 3!)
Lynne (if her schedule permits)
Terry
Karen
Jess (Team Captain #1)
Emily
Ian
Premica
Mike B
Dean
Diana
Susan
John (Team Captain #4)
Bill D
Marco
Dan C
Jack (leg 8)
Paul P
Sukhi (Team Captain #2)
Paul B
Dan G-D
Kathy
Carla (anything but 4 or 7)
Doug
Lan
Cheryl (leg 5 please!)
Crystal
Russell (leg 1 please!)

Note - final team and leg assignments probably won’t happen til early October!

Volunteers:
Rik
Bettie
Sally

Spares:
Roger
Monika (for the no pressure team)
Arthur
Kris
Shi-Ling

Anyone interested in reviving the ”stay the night in Harrison” tradition?

Stormy Results

100 milers Jess and Bill:

The weather was hot at noon on Friday when Jess and Bill started their 100 mile ordeal. Neither finished the race but to quote Bill (who had knee problems 50 + miles into it) “I’ve had a good season so I’m not going to let it bother me.” A good season? Winning the Vancouver 100? That’s a great season.

Jess made it to mile 75 before having to drop. Too much road-like running (logging roads) not enough trails. This is the farthest she’s ever run and definitely a great personal success. And of course big thanks goes to her night-crew: PRR’s finest- Dave M and Mike S - , plus Michelle from Fat Ass. (Editor’s note: Hey Dave, I ran part of that trail in the daylight - can’t imagine running it at night - these people are crazy.)

 50 milers Ellie and Sukhi:

Different story on the weather. Ellie was 2nd overall and First woman! completing the course in 8:19:07

Sukhi completed in 9:59:25. Under 10 - that’s all that matters.

Relays:

John Susan & Terry came third in the relay division - somewhere around 7:20. Well done.
Bill P, Len, Monique, Premica, Nicki, Grant & Laura finished around 8:34:25 -thirty seconds ahead of…
…Dan, Karen, Lan, Dianna (ran 2 legs), Shi-Ling & Dean. 8:34:55

Those who ran leg 5 were the luckiest because they got to hang out at exchange 4 - undoubtedly the best exchange on the course because it was staffed by…

Volunteers:

…Bettie, Sally, Lynne, Paul B and Judi. Thanks volunteers. You were out there in the rain longer than the relayers (not as long as our “soloists”) and didn’t have the advantage of running to stay warm. Always wonderful to see familiar faces when you’re out there cursing the weather and the damned HILLS.

It felt like a PRR social in the Brennan Park parking lot. 18 club members stuck around to cheer on the finishers and enjoy the picnic brought to you by Memphis Blues (if Dave had known that he might have waited 14 hours) and awards ceremony. .

From all reports the runners unanimously enjoyed the event - even with the rain.  Sign me up for next year. I might even train for it.  (The relay I mean.  Let’s not get carried away!)  Plus I have witnesses who will testify that John said he’s thinking 50 mile.
