PRR in Dawson City
Posted by: PRR Executive @ 7:11 pm

While in Dawson City for the music festival Ross decided to try out the local race - the 2009 Midnight Dome run.  (Midnight Dome is so named because from its summit at midnight on June 21 you can watch the sun dip to the horizon before rising again pretty much immediately.)

According to Ross, this is an “awful” run.  7km straight up - nothing flat - 3000 ft elevation gain.  His time 53:59.  Apparently he feels ripped off because there was no category for most hung over runner - a category he is sure he would have won.  As with previous postings - for more information, inquire directly with Ross.

From Macchu Pichu to Dawson City - what’s next?

Now come on, ’fess up. Who read that “awful” part and thought - “I gotta try it”?  Grant?  Sukhi?

A big PRR welcome to Mike - our 97th member.  Anyone else want to join a running/social group?  We run from False Creek Community Center every Tuesday and Thursday at 6:00 pm. We have an organized social every month and a spontaneous mini social most Tuesdays and many Thursdays.  Come check us out!

Summerfast 10km

One lonely PRR runner at Summerfast despite extolling the virtues of the baked goods.  Dave M ran the 10 km in 55:03:02.  And I have no doubt that he participated whole-heartedly in the post race provisions.

11 PRR runners.  15 PRR volunteers.  Gotta love that ratio.  And great weather too- although it must have been hot for the runners at the finish.

First here are the volunteers:  Rik, Susan and Rick as sweeps.  Dave, Roger, Sally, Sukhi, and Jack at Cypress.  Mike, Nicki, Stephen, Janet, Emily and Ian with a surprise guest appearance by Maurice at Skyline.

And now the part you really want to know about - the runners:

Ellie       5:36:24  First woman (by about 20 minutes)
Terry      6:52:36
Bill         7:04:47  (How’s the ankle?)
John       7:10:54  (Ditto?)
Ed         7:55:56  (first time!)
Jim        7:58:09 - (proving once again that you don’t have to train to run this)
Matthew 8:00:39 (first time!)
Jess       8:13:00
Ross      8:27:59 - (first time - and a tough one at that)
Jon        8:30:54 -  Second in his division!
Sam      9:15:01

Congratulations runners.  What’s your next challenge?

This is such a great race.  If you didn’t participate this year, come out next year and run, volunteer or cheer.  You’ll enjoy it.

Here’s a link to Bettie’s photos (seems the race wasn’t the biggest news of the weekend!)

Seek the Peak

July 5

If you don’t think the Grind is enough of a workout, checkout this race.  Seek the Peak is designed as a relay but the truly crazy run it solo. That would be Sukhi.

Sukhi ran from Ambleside up Capilano Road, up the Grind and - since that isn’t quite enough of a climb - to the top of the Peak.  His time - 1:55:36.  Total 16km and with the exception of the occasional flat section it’s pretty much all uphill.

July BBQ - POSTPONED TO JULY 14
Posted by: PRR Executive @ 7:34 am

UPDATE:  our annual beach BBQ has been postponed due to weather.  July 7 is now a regular club run.  See you tonight at the community center.  New BBQ date:  July 14. Let Jess know if the change in dates changes your plans to attend.

Tues July 14 is the re-scheduled date for our annual beach BBQ.  It is one of only 2 runs per year where WE DON’T MEET AT the community center. Check your email for more details - and make sure you RSVP.  We’re buying the burgers - but if you don’t RSVP - there won’t be any food for you.

Bare Buns
Posted by: PRR Executive @ 5:29 pm

It’s the next step after running the Underwear division of Chips.  The Bare Buns run took place at Wreck Beach on Sunday. Only 2 PRRers there to represent us - Dan and Arthur.  This race was tailor-made for Arthur because they even had a funny hat division.  Guess who won that one?

Arthur ran 29:08 and won the 66+ category. Congratulations Arthur (although bitter rivals claim you mysteriously aged an extra year recently.  Hmmmm.  But no one can take away your hat category prize.)

Dan ran 29:30 and came 6/17 in the M56-65 category.

John decided to complete his KK training rather than run around naked, which means Bettie wasn’t around to take photos.  Maybe we should all be grateful since Arthur also won an award for “best side decoration”.  It’s possible we don’t want to know what that was!

Upcoming Events to consider

July 11 - Knee Knacker.
In true PRR spirit - we’ll have lots of volunteers at Skyline and Cypress to cheer on our own 12 runners - and maybe even a bunch of non PRR runners.  Can’t make it to the volunteer stations?  Head for the finish in Deep Cove and celebrate with the finishers.

July 14 - PRR BBQ
Always a good turn out at this event.  Run from the beach rather than from the club.

July 18 - Summerfast
According to Dave M - good baked goods at the finish.

Aug 8 - STORMY
We’ll have at least 3 relay teams in this one.  Even in the pouring rain last year we managed to have a good time.  If you want to join in the fun - email Sukhi.

And if you’re really into planning ahead:

October 11 - Royal Victoria Marathon, Half Marathon, 8km
See the May newsletter for hotel recommendations.

November 7 - H2H
Registration opens in August for this event - so it’s not too early to consider whether you want to be part of a team.  8 runners per team,  100km total distance.  Individuals legs of 8 - 14 km.  Last year we had 4 teams participating.  Do we go for 5?  What’s not to love about spending a soggy cold day cramped into a car with rain-soaked sweaty runners waiting for your turn to hit the pavement.  It’s always a highlight of our running year.

I’m accepting applications for team captain positions already - but the real planning starts in August.
