PRR welcomes our newest members - Lisa, Ainslie and Carol.  Anyone else want to join a running/social club?  You don’t have to be fast. You just need to be willing to run even if it’s raining (because let’s face it - November is just around the corner.) False Creek Community Center - Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:00 pm

5 Peaks and Frosty

Sept 19 - 20

This weekend was the final race in the 5 Peaks series.  The race was at Buntzen Lake and included distances of 15.5 (Enduro) 11 (Sport) and 26.5 (Half Marathon).  But it’s a Half Marathon in the same way as the Knee Knacker is a Marathon.  (Is there such a thing as an Ultra Half?).

Ross ran the Sport distance and came in 2nd in the Clydesdale division with a time of 1:00:26.  But this time there was a weigh-in! Well not really.  Being an honest competitor, Ross weighed himself that morning. A few extra beers/fries/slices of pizza this week ensured that he hit the edge of the weight range and with that claimed his rightful place - not only 2nd in the race but also 2nd Clydesdale overall in the series.  His good fortune turned out to be John’s even better fortune - Ross won a GPS watch as a series prize and generously offered it up to club members on a first come first serve basis.  John, who was either doing homework online or should have been doing homework online but was distracted by his email, snapped up the prize.  Not bad!

Grant ran the “Half Marathon” in a time of 3:09:04.  And since we know he can run a full marathon in close to that time -we’ll simply extrapolate to determine the overall difficulty of the course.  I’m going with “ouch”.

Our Frosty runners were John (without GPS)   7:03  and Ed   8:54 in the 50 km and Stephen P in the 13 km - who finished with a blistering time of 40:06 to win that race.  Now we all know Stephen’s fast but I’m a little suspicious of a 40 min 13 km trail run.  Either the course was a touch short or, given his propensity to take the wrong turn maybe -  just maybe -  there was a discrepancy in the route.  It’s all good though - he ran a little too far at Stormy and a little too short at Frosty.  We’ll call it even ,Stephen.

(To be fair - I’m sure Stephen ran the same course as everyone else in the 13km and is entirely completely thoroughly deserving of his win.)

Well done gentlemen.

Nice route.  14 km from Kits to English Bay then Stanley Park to the North Shore.  As with all point to point runs there is always the shuttle issue but given the outstanding weather and the route - the shuttle was a relatively minor concern.

Bill Codville         59:34   13th overall and 3rd in his division.
Cheryl Masters      1:12:06  Cheryl came 4th in the NO AGE division.  I like that division.
Dianna Robertson    1:14:50   (she’s absolutely certain she would have beat Cheryl if she hadn’t been at a wedding the night before.)

September 13

As Jack will tell you, this is a great event and a great cause.  I believe he was our lone PRR participant in the event.  Anyone else take part? Let me know and I’ll add your name to the posting.  Let’s see if we can get more club members out next year!

PS Speaking of great events - Monique is asking for Packet Pickup volunteers for the Run for the Cure - first weekend in October.

H2H - time to get organized

This is one of PRR’s most popular participation events.  We’ll enter 4 or 5 teams (which means we’ll need 4 or 5 dedicated volunteers.) For our new members, here’s how it works: there are 8 runners per team and legs range from 8 km flat to 14 km seriously unflat.

We try to balance our teams to finish together - mixing the speedy with the not-so-speedy.  And while in theory we’re there to participate - we definitely compete.  With each other.  There’s trash talk.  Bets.  Dares.  Pressure.  Rain. Wind.

We get up at 4:30 am, crowd into cars with fellow club members, drive over an hour to Maple Ridge and see our Leg 1 runners off to the start.  The we hop along the course - dropping off a runner and picking up the next one. Some of us help out at Exchange 3.

When the race ends we head to the community center in Mission to use the hot tub, water slide and showers.  Then we go out for dinner - and no matter where we go we totally overwhelm the restaurant staff.  The day ends around 18 hours after it began.

Sound like fun?  It most certainly is.

So here’s where I’ll keep the list of people who’ve signed up.    We need multiples of 8 and we’re currently at 38 - so we’re 2 people away from 5 full teams.   AND we need one more volunteer for 5 teams.
